Description:
Leogate Estate Wines was formed by Bill and Vicki Widin shortly after they purchased Brokenback Vineyard in two portions from Fosters Group and Tyrrell’s Group. The 2009 vintage was made under contract by Gary Reed of Petersons Wines. In late 2009 Leogate Estate purchased all of the plant and equipment in the Tempus Two Winery at Pokolbin from the Roche Group, just before the 2010 January/February vintage. The Tempus Two Winery premises were leased in anticipation of constructing new Winery premises at the Brokenback Vineyard and moving the plant and equipment to the new building before the 2012 vintage. The existing Winery at Tempus Two was built in 2006 and is regarded by most winemakers as state of the art. The capacity is 195,000 litres in stainless steel tanks and vats, which translates to approximately 300 tonnes of harvested grapes. Both French and American oak barrels have been acquired to age the Chardonnay and Shiraz wines. The Consultant Winemaker is Liz Jackson. Liz is very familiar with the Winery, being the Winemaker for Tempus Two in 2006-2008. The wines of Leogate Estate shall, to the extent possible, be sourced from Brokenback Vineyard as a single vineyard, with the dominant objective of playing a significant part in the restoration of Pokolbin to its original and rightful place as Australia’s premier wine growing district.
