2018 Tyrrell's Winemaker's Selection Vat 47 Hunter Chardonnay

92 points - I recall drinking this wine back in the early 1980s when it was called pinot chardonnay. Back then it was at the forefront of Aussie chardonnay, but was a bit disappointing to me as it was a bit fat and oaky - and it tended to fall in a heap after a few years in the bottle. It lacked integrity and substance. Today's version is leaner, more complex and improves with age. It still spends 9 months in French oak and that flavour lingers without detracting or distracting. A very good food wine and a fine chardonnay, though to my taste it doesn't match the best from Tasmania, Margaret River and Victoria. Full marks though to Tyrrell's for persisting with this and committing to continuous improvement.

95 points - Bright gold greenish colour. Very fine aromas, restrained yet intense and ripe. Beautifully put together wine, acidity is refined and enlivens the richness on the palate. Some green apple and caramel like notes, lees and barrel-work influencing the texture. Nice refinement, long finish.

95 points - Grass green. Lanolin, toasty nose. Racy acidity. Fresh, yummy summer wine with complexity coming through. Some fine salinity as well.

95 points - Light and pellucid greenish gold. Delicate, lemon and floral aromas, perhaps a lick of snuffed candle too. The finesse and poise in the mouth is beautiful. Acidity filigreed and delicate. Talcum-like, touches of oyster shell character and salinity. Mellow from age too.

95 points - Aged Semillon colour showing. Lemon balm, toast, some coffee tones. Wonderful seafood wine. Prawns, lobster, scallops. Still just entering the drinking zone. Give it another 3 years, or better 5-7.

96 points - Medium to light yellow. Surprisingly youthful in the aromas, straw, nuanced. Good if moderate intensity, refinement and excellent length. An elegant white full of finesse and confidence in its restrained nature.

92 points - Very good aged semillon, but perhaps lacking in the citric intensity often found in Hunter semillons and/or aged toastiness that I might expect from a 16 year old wine. Nice wine, but not quite up to my expectations.

2022 Tyrrell's Shiraz

91 points - Dark medium purple red. Attractive, plummy, rocky aromas. Supple, well made shiraz, certainly enjoyable if not particularly complex. Nice sappiness, phenolic grip to provide that interest. Fruity and youthful.
