Cellar Door Crawl in Central Otago, NZ.

Central Otago, New Zealand is the up and coming New World region recognised for its Pinot Noir. Some say its Pinot Noirs, alongside those from Martinborough, are the most similar in style to venerable Burgundy.

Since exorbitant roaming data charges weren't to our tastes, we used offline email and SMS to send our tasting notes to Corkscore.

What better way to explore Central Otago's wines than to stay at Tiritiri Lodge in Wanaka. We were pampered by hosts Stephanie and Denis, former Sydneysiders who fell in love with New Zealand's natural beauty

Ideally situated in the lakeside town of Wanaka, Central Otago, it is the perfect luxury retreat from which wine adventures should start.

Made-to-order breakfasts to start the day

Daily highlights include the full breakfast, freshly prepared to order by Chef Tiffany, and "Drink o'clock" tastings of top local wines with gourmet appetizers.

The trip highlight was the Winemaker's Dinner with Grant Taylor — one of the leading winemakers in Central Otago. He is the man behind many of the region's trophy-winning wines, such as the Bald Hills Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, and has his own label, Valli Wines. Smoked Lake Wanaka trout on potato cake and Bannockburn saffron aioli matched with Valli Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2008 was simply astounding. Perfect Cardrona lamb rack was matched with best of the region Valli's Gibbston and Bannockburn Vineyard 2007 Pinot Noirs. Bliss!

We were so enamoured by the level of personal service and style, that we've organised a special package for Corkscore members at Tiritiri Lodge.

Pinot Noir

Accounting for the vast majority of plantings, Central Otago Pinot Noirs tend to exhibit bright red berry and leafy characters. Bannockburn Pinots tend to get warmer weather, producing bigger wines. The Gibbston Valley Pinots tend to be more elegant due to a cooler climate.

Sauvignon Blanc Not Popular With Serious Wine Lovers

Sauvignon Blanc may be growing fast in the mainstream market, but the grape fails to ignite a love affair with serious wine drinkers. User ratings on Corkscore.com, a site where wine lovers track wines as they drink from their mobile phones, show that wines made from Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are the lowest rated among the major varietals.

Sauvignon Blanc not popular with serious wine lovers

“We have often heard in conversations with wine aficionados that Sauvignon Blanc is perceived as a simple, fruit driven and at times one-dimensional wine. Ratings from our users now provide some concrete data”, says Lars Herold, CEO of Corkscore. “On the positive side, it should be noted that the best Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs do get ratings of up to 92-94pts.”

Corkscore.com is a free service where wine lovers can keep their tasting notes and check wine prices directly when they drink or buy, with mobile, iPhone, SMS, Email and web access. The company regularly analyses its ratings database to discover emerging trends among its growing base of wine lovers.

Sauvignon Blanc based wines score an average rating of 84.5 points on the 100-point scale, which is 2.6 points below the average Corkscore rating of 87.1. From the major varietals only Merlot wines score lower, with an average rating of only 80.3.

Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc also have the highest standard deviation of ratings, which underlines the mixed reception of these varietals among wine aficionados.
