Music & Wine Concert A Resounding Success

Wow, what an amazing experience! The Music & Wine concert organised by Gourmet Traveller Wine, Theme & Variations and Corkscore at the Sydney Conservatorium was a resounding success. Guests seated on stage around the Steinway piano enjoyed a range of tantalising performances by students of the Conservatorium, with each piece matched by a special wine.

You don't get any closer to a pianist in concert than this. When the first harp-like chords of the Chopin Nocturne emerged, a feeling of intimate magic filled the stage of Verbrugghen Hall. There we were – on stage, directly with the artist, sitting around the piano, sipping wines and taking it all in.

The program of the night consisted of music and wines matched together. Guests rated the wines with Corkscore and also provided thoughtful commentary on the wine-music matches:

Camellia Wong: Chopin – Nocturne Db major Op 27 No. 2
2009 Henschke Peggy’s Hill Riesling, Eden Valley
"Perfect reflection of the Chopin Nocturne No 2 in D flat major – delicate, mellifluous and ethereal."

Hank Xiang: Scriabin – Etudes Op 8 No 11 & No 12
2008 Melis Iocalia Vermentino DOC, Sardinia, Italy
"No wine matches this music (i.e. Scriabin). Rather the pianist deserves a stiff drink afterwards!"

Nicholas Young: Debussy – Danse
1999 Ayala Blancs de Blancs, Champagne
"Brilliant music, matched with brilliant Champagne."

Young Kwon: Ravel – Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit
2008 Stonier Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula
"Raspberries, mulberries, melons. And the most wonderful music (the best)."

James Guan: Prokofiev – 4th movement from Piano Sonata No 6 in A major
2007 Silvano Strologo Julius Rosso Conero DOC, Le Marche, Italy
"Earthy character – almost Hunter. Huge fruit yet dry and lucious. A beautiful dense complex wine, enhanced by the the mystery of Prokofiev. "

Henock Kristianto: Liszt - Transcendental Etude No 5, Feux Follets
2007 Philip Shaw No 17 Merlot Cabernet Franc Cabernet Sauvignon, Orange
"Amazing – it is a very grown up wine. Music as dramatic as the wine."

The top wine as rated by our guests was 2007 Philip Shaw No 17, with an average rating of 91pts on the night. You can click on the wines to read all the reviews and ratings.

To the artists: Thank you for your exciting performances. To our guests: Thank you for attending this event.

We have dreamed about setting this up. It has finally become a reality. We can't wait for the next one! The only question remains: Which stage shall we conquer next?

PS: From the Corkscore team a very special Thank You to Caroline from Theme & Variations, who organised the venue and the performers; to Ara Vartoukian, who worked his magic to prepare the magnificent Steinway D piano; and to the entire team from the Gourmet Traveller Wine around Judy Sarris, who managed the event in the most delightful manner. Santé!

The setting: Guests sitting on stage in an intimate atmosphere around the Steinway.

Feeling like the artist: To be on stage with the artists is a unique experience.

La Tour or Latour? Corkscore app solves iPhone wine data chaos

La Tour, Latur, or Latour? Messy wine data and cluttered user interfaces make up over 60% of complaints about existing wine apps on the iPhone. Corkscore’s Vintage 2 wine app is a fresh take on wine searching, providing relief from these problems with a clean wine database, a user friendly interface and pre-emptive Magic Search.

“Messy wine data with multiple spellings of the same wine is a major problem for all current wine sites and mobile apps”, says Lars Herold, CEO of Corkscore.com. “A study by VinTank shows two market leading databases have about 60% of their wines wrong, misspelled or duplicated. Combine this with clumsy search solutions and the user is in a fine mess. We realised quickly that our approach had to be totally different on two fronts: a clean wine database and a smart way to find the wine you’re looking for.

Corkscore.com has been designed from the outset to be different from other wine sites and apps. The company has built its own wine database with a team of wine researchers and editors. Clean wine data has been hand picked straight from the source from hundreds of thousands of winery sites. Corkscore also validates all new wine entries by users. The result is an unsullied wine database with cellar door prices for over 130,000 US, European, Australian and New Zealand wines.

The app also incorporates pre-emptive Magic Search technology. Just five letters are typically enough to find a wine, winery or region in the database, where search results are updated and predicted with every keystroke. “Typing ‘oreg’ for example takes you straight to Oregon, where you can see subregions, wineries and their wines systematically organised”, says Herold.

Corkscore.com is a free service for wine lovers to keep their tasting notes and check wine prices directly when they drink or buy, with iPhone, mobile, web, SMS and Email access.
